Rhododendron species are not native to the British Isles, but have instead been introduced from other countries throughout the world. Rhododendron hirsutum was the first species to be introduced to Britain in 1656. Rhododendron hirsutum was originally native to the Alps, as is its better known close relative the alpen rose, or Rhododendron ferrugineum. Rhododendron ponticum arrived from southern and Eastern Europe during 1763 and has since earned a reputation as a self seeding, troublesome weed.

Most of the large flowered and alpine species were introduced during plant hunting expeditions in China, Tibet and the Himalayas, when Joseph Hooker, George Forrest, Ernest Wilson, Kingdon Ward and others travelled through then unknown and often dangerous parts of the world to seek out and collect seed of new or outstanding plants. Species were also introduced from North America and Japan.

Man has always tried to improve on nature. Consequently, most compatible Rhododendron species were crossed and re-crossed, not only in Great Britain, but in many other countries throughout the world. This has resulted in thousands of hybrids being produced; many are outstanding, but others are not comparable with their parents. Many of these are ideal for the smaller garden, and even rockeries. Others will form small trees often with large leaves, which require shelter to prevent them from being shredded by strong winds.

Rhododendrons provide us with an outstanding range of flower colours, many having orchid-like blotches (bees) on their lower petal. Although we do list Azaleas separately from Rhododendrons, botanically they are just a subsection of the Rhododendron genus. We point this out as the RHS Plant Finder lists them all under the Rhododendron genus.

Our list shows you some of the finest Rhododendrons that are available and this will be added to as better, or more outstanding hybrids are introduced.
