40 years ago conifers were at the height of their popularity but when Cupressocyparis x leylandii was sold in thousands throughout the UK as a fast growing hedging plant the popularity of conifers, this was mainly due to the bad press which x leylandii conifers received when neighborly disputes arose often as court cases about overgrown and neglected x leylandii hedges.

Why conifers have lost their popularity is difficult to understand as there are many outstanding miniature, dwarf, medium and tall growing conifers which if carefully selected for their form and foliage colour will help to give added interest throughout the year.

If in doubt call along to our nursery where expert advice is available on the numerous varieties that are available to use for troughs, rockeries, as ground cover, or as specimens to use as focal points in the garden. We can even give advice on conifers which are amenable as container grown specimens for a patio, but here we would remind everyone that conifers, in their first year after planting require watering regularly during the growing season. Container grown plants may require to be watered every other day during hot weather.

All conifers can be clipped, or pruned to keep then neat and also to prevent them from becoming too large. Most only need to be clipped only once during April, or early September. Fast growing hedging conifers may need to be trimmed three times a year. We use electric tarpen type trimmers to trim all large conical and hedging conifers.

During June you can prune out the ends of all Pines, Spruces and Silver Firs, this will not only prevent them becoming to large, but will also help to create a more dense plant.

Abies alba 'Pendula' ---

Abies concolor 'Aurea' ---
A superb evergreen conifer which forms a medium sized tree. Young foliage is a soft butter yellow and this ages to a silver-grey. Requires a fertile, moist, but well drained soil in sun. Height 20 feet.
Abies concolor 'Blue Spreader' ---
This is a Goscote introduction. A vigorous spreading conifer with lovely, soft, large silvery-blue foliage.  Best grown in a moist fertile well drained soil in full sun. Height 2 feet by 10 feet across.
Abies concolor 'Masonic Broom' ---
A choice, very dwarf fir which forms a tight mound of blue-grey foliage.  Ideal rockery plant.  Requires a fertile, moist, but well drained soil in sun or part shade.  Height 12 inches.
Abies concolor Violacea Group ---
A vigorous evergreen conifer which forms a broad, spreading mass of branches with blue-green leaves. Will grow in most fertile, well drained soils in sun. Height 3 to 4 feet by 9 feet spread.
Abies concolor 'Wintergold' ---
A recently introduced Fir which is still very scarce. Forming a slow pyramid of pale yellow foliage which ages to gold in the winter.  Requires a fertile, moist, but well drained soil in sun or part shade.  Height 3 feet in 10 years.

A dwarf evergreen conifer, rounded when young and building up into a small cone. Soft blue leaves, and purple cones on older plants. Requires a fertile, well drained soil in sun. Height 3 feet in 20 years.
Abies koreana 'Compact Dwarf' ---
A low growing, compact, evergreen conifer which forms a broad dome of silver-grey foliage. Requires a fertile, moist, but well drained soil in sun or part shade. Height 3 feet.

An unusual form of the Korean Fir with yellow foliage. A slow growing evergreen, bushy when young and developing a leader with age. Requires a fertile, moist but well drained soil in sun. Height 3 feet in 10 years.

Araucaria araucana  ---
The evergreen Monkey Puzzle with large dark green spine tipped leaves, with grey bark wrinkled like elephant hide. Will eventually form a large tree but it is slow growing.  Best grown in a fertile well drained soil in sun. Height 20 feet in 20 years.
