40 years ago conifers were at the height of their popularity but when Cupressocyparis x leylandii was sold in thousands throughout the UK as a fast growing hedging plant the popularity of conifers, this was mainly due to the bad press which x leylandii conifers received when neighborly disputes arose often as court cases about overgrown and neglected x leylandii hedges.

Why conifers have lost their popularity is difficult to understand as there are many outstanding miniature, dwarf, medium and tall growing conifers which if carefully selected for their form and foliage colour will help to give added interest throughout the year.

If in doubt call along to our nursery where expert advice is available on the numerous varieties that are available to use for troughs, rockeries, as ground cover, or as specimens to use as focal points in the garden. We can even give advice on conifers which are amenable as container grown specimens for a patio, but here we would remind everyone that conifers, in their first year after planting require watering regularly during the growing season. Container grown plants may require to be watered every other day during hot weather.

All conifers can be clipped, or pruned to keep then neat and also to prevent them from becoming too large. Most only need to be clipped only once during April, or early September. Fast growing hedging conifers may need to be trimmed three times a year. We use electric tarpen type trimmers to trim all large conical and hedging conifers.

During June you can prune out the ends of all Pines, Spruces and Silver Firs, this will not only prevent them becoming to large, but will also help to create a more dense plant.
